When to call

South Trace Pediatrics welcomes your questions and will quickly address urgent problems.  We have skilled nurses to assist in answering telephone questions.  Your physician will return calls that cannot be handled by the nurses.  Usually, you can expect these physician calls after 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to allow us to care for scheduled patients with a minimum of interruptions.

After Hours Care and Emergencies

In case of an after-hours emergency, call the regular office number, 985-9424.  The answering service will have a nurse call you back shortly to discuss your child’s problem. The nurses consult with the pediatrician on call for any patient that needs to be seen or for anything unusual.

South Trace Pediatrics shares night and weekend call with another group of Hoover pediatricians.  We do see a group of our own patients on Saturdays and Sundays at the Childrens Hospital’s After Hours Pediatric Center.  If you have a sick child on a weekend morning, simply call the office and ask the nurse for a time to have the child seen.  We limit these time slots to sick children only.

We request that you restrict after-hours calls to emergencies or significant illnesses.  For example, call us with:

  •  emergencies such as difficulty breathing, bleeding, seizures, acute     injuries or poisonings
  •  fever in infants under 6 months of age
  •  persistent vomiting, allergic reactions, and other urgent medical    problems

When possible, call us before going to an emergency room or urgent care clinic.  Your child's problem might be better handled in our office with less expense and more convenience to you.  Some insurance plans require us to pre-approve certain urgent visits before they will pay the clinic fees.  We will help you choose the best treatment option.

Prescriptions and Refills

The staff of South Trace Pediatrics needs your child's medical record to make the appropriate decision on a request for a prescription refill.  Prescription refills are not handled after hours or on weekends.  Our nursing staff cannot phone in any prescription without the doctor ordering it. It is our general policy not to phone in antibiotic prescriptions.  IF your child is sick enough to require an antibiotic, he or she should first be examined.

Hospitalizations

Sick children are admitted to The Children's Hospital of Alabama and cared for by our pediatrician.  The physician at South Trace Pediatrics see newborns at the following hospitals:

  •  Brookwood Medical Center
  •  St. Vincent’s Hospital
  •  Baptist Montclair, Princeton, and Shelby hospitals
  •  UAB West
  •  UAB Hospital
